The Transition Diet

It is very important that people learn how to transition from the most harmful mucus-forming foods to the ones that leave behind the least amount of waste. To learn more about this transitional process, check out the TRANSITION DIET section of the Mucusless Diet Healing System.

About the Author: Prof. Spira

Prof. Spira learned of Arnold Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System from Brother Air in 2002 and the information profoundly changed his life. By 2003 he'd lost over 110 pounds and cured many ailments including chronic migraine headaches, lower back pain, allergies, and chronic cases of bronchitis. In 2004 he and Brother Air formed the Breathairean Ensemble which would act as a support system for its members as they pursue superior health. Prof. Spira believes that Ehret uncovered the solution for chronic human illness which consists of eliminating pus and mucus-forming foods from one's diet followed by a transition to mucus-free fruits, green-leaf vegetables, and fasting.

any food becomes acid if is not proper digested. The best raw fruit and vegetable if not proper digested, it will become acid and even mucus forming if eating in excess.

Spira August 7, 2013 at 11:26 am
That is true, which is why it is so important for the bowels to move properly.

karuna August 26, 2016 at 6:12 pm
so lets focus on a solution here instead of just saying ‘all food is bad’ because this article basically is depressing…..so the answer/solution to getting ‘digestion/bowels moving’ is: unrefined sea salt. Look it up, do your research

Lady October 1, 2016 at 3:19 pm
Actually, it’s good to focus on selecting the right food AND improving digestion. Typically, if you eat well, your digestion improves. Why have an overly emotional reaction to healthy suggestions? If the information “depress” you then this may not be an appropriate forum for you. Your post was a bit disrespectful to this gentleman.

Great article and list. Very informative and will prove helpful for its broadness and easy access.

Baja August 8, 2013 at 3:02 pm
There is a conflict between your list and Dr Sebi’s list. Which one is the most accurate?

Spira August 8, 2013 at 4:12 pm
What are the items that conflict?

Baja August 8, 2013 at 8:18 pm
CEREALS (MODERATELY MUCUS-FORMING):
Rye bread,Quinoa, Spelt, Amaranth.
Nuts: Almonds
Seed: Sesame seeds
Apple Cider Vinegar
Vanilla Extract
Mushrooms(according to Dr Sebi is not fungus)
Olives

Spira August 14, 2013 at 2:19 pm
I did notice this conflict years ago when I first checked out some of Dr. Sebi’s works. We both have been influenced by Prof. Ehret to varying degrees, but do not see eye to eye on all issues. Ehret explains that all fats are mucus-forming, thus all nuts, seeds, and fatty fruits (olives, avocados). Cereals are certainly mucus forming. You can test this yourself. Take a cereal product, add a bit of water and heat it at 98 degrees on the stove. Do the same to grapes. Let them both sit in an air tight bag for a few days. You will see that the cereal starts to turn into a viscous sludge, whereas the grapes turn into a kind of syrup that has no viscous, mucus-forming constituents. Like I’ve mentioned before, some of the items listed above may be used in moderation on the transition. But it must be understood that they are mucus/acid-forming and will cause illness if eaten too much. And for those aspiring to be mucusless, they will need to eventually be eliminated all together. Peace, Love, and Breath.

Adriano December 22, 2014 at 5:39 am
Dr Sebi is against starch, yet he recommends black & wild rice, spelt and rye. Anyone can or heard him explain this? Is it just because they are not too acid and not hybrid?

Spira February 2, 2015 at 11:04 am
I appreciate Dr. Sebi and love that he promotes Ehret’s works to his followers. Yet, I disagree with him on some of the foods that he lists as mucus-free vs. mucus-forming (as you pointed out a couple). I’m not quite sure why he identifies certain items that Ehret or I list as mucus-forming to be non-mucus-forming. And on the other side, we tend to not be as concerned with the hybrid vs. non-hybrid analysis. We examine how effective a food item is at eliminating from the body and leaving behind the least amount of metabolic waste or degrade into slime. Non-hybrid, Mucus-free fruits may be the highest level, but I’d rather see someone eat a hybrid mucus-free fruit than any kind of rice or grain (although some grains may be used within the context of “the transition diet,” but they should viewed as “mucuslean’ and not mucus-free).

Peace, Love, and Breath!

So what about the acids in our stomach tha t helps break down food. How does this affect the production of mucus?

Georgia Barretto August 15, 2013 at 3:46 am
After reading the list I got stronger and was more inclined to buy more fruits and veggies instead of what I thought I had to buy for my kids to make other people happy. But then now with more fruits and veggies they actually like it better and are eating great, even my fussy one is loving the fruits and the fried up veggies I make with onions, green bell peppers, garlic and purple cabbage. (I just add some water to cook/fry it a little with just a tiny bit of olive oil, my bad, and a tynny bit of pink salt. I was also able to cut down substancially on our sugar and salt intake. Then, happy me, after having 5 kids I am weighing my most ideal weight 128, feeling great, lots of energy, doing a lot of things I like and feeling happy again and ready to live the life I was meant to live…feel closer to God and to that higher dimension paradisial state , my ability to smell is what I normally notice first thing as a progression on my health…Thanks again this list made a huge difference for me to stop being on denial about what’s really the right things to eat which like most people say little option but who needs more when you get the best of foods???NO thanks I am done with spitting mucus…

Spira August 16, 2013 at 10:53 am
Thank you for sharing your story Georgia!

Georgia Barretto August 15, 2013 at 3:52 am
According to Prof. Ehret’s book that list from one of his partners or Dr. from his time who wrote similar list olives were on the top rant of one of the best things to eat and I was eating a lot of them, so they are not as good as it was mentioned???If not what do they resemble in the mucus level? Avocado? I really thought it was super good and ate a tons of it before.

Eric Sprik August 16, 2013 at 6:37 am
I noticed that too Georgia, ate quit a few myself because it also gives the next food a nice ride through the body 😉
I also wonder if heating products to 98°C does represent the body’s processing of food. Once, I left some (cut) leek leaf lying on the bench and after half a day it would not come off. Had to hammer it off! The fluid inside had turned into a glue. Later, as an experiment I actually glued things together with leek leaves… Don’t want that (or any onion family) in my body I guess.

Spira August 16, 2013 at 10:52 am
The ‘list’ that Ehret has in the book is problematic. Ehret advises that you ‘take it with a grain of salt’, as it was not meant to be a recommended foods list. I will be releasing a post about the Ragnar Berg Table and its problems very soon. And olives are fatty and acidic. Although not the worst thing you could eat during the transition, I do not recommend getting too comfortable with them for extended periods of time. Peace, Love, and Breath!

Eric Sprik August 16, 2013 at 2:37 pm
Thx Spira for keeping in touch with your readers, not so common these days. I am interested in the pursuit of truth regardless of the subject and you are helping (me and others). Love that, the world needs us.
When my mother was pregnat of my (my body) she wanted to eat lots of pickles (the green veggie). I do not believe these are acid forming in the blood, because normally seets are acid-forming and acids re alkaline/sweet forming in the blood. Moreover, a very healthy homeless guy I know eats a lot of them and when I ate macrobiotic it was a *recommended) part of my menu; Also leaven bread with (cooked/raw) veggies was. I went out in wintertime without any coat in that period, lots of energy…
We must search for our personal salvation and stay open for general info i.m.o. 🙂

As far as I can tell, and according to Ehret, they are acid-forming. As a rule of them, any fermented food or item with vinegar in it is acid-forming. Ehret is adamant about getting rid of vinegar as soon as possible, and I agree. Of course, if your bowels are fairly clean, such items will not be as devastating as eating pus (meat) since they will eliminate fast. Another thing is that most people who have cleansed for a while find the smell and taste of fermented foods to be awful. I used to like things that had vinegar in them, but can not stand them now that I’ve changed the nature of my taste buds.

Colleen K. Peltomaa December 1, 2013 at 12:00 pm
Aside from the commercial krauts that sit in distilled vinegar, does this also include the home-made krauts which ferment in a brine?

After a long fast I just asked myself, “what’s next”, and my heart says this is next, thank you for putting this information out there.

Spira January 3, 2014 at 6:19 pm
All fermented foods are certainly acid-forming and not recommended to use at higher stages of the Mucusless Diet. Although, such items could be used during the transition. But, I normally advise people to get away from fermented foods as early in the transition as possible. Peace, Love, and Breath!

Honestly, the lifestyle seems extreme. I think about all the other parts of the world where people live in various climates without the ability to always eat fresh fruits and veges. The reason for why we created all these other foods to help sustain us such as kombucha, rich, milk, etc.. Would it be fair that all our creations in an attempt to live better were all mucus forming and essentially killing us slowly? Many cultures have lived very well in a state of health without having to be strict on all fruits and veges lifestyle. I’m not sure that it’s about perfection, but balance. Chinese medicine dates back thousands of years as does Ayurvedic medicine. Perhaps all things can be taken into consideration before making one way THE right way.

Spira August 16, 2013 at 10:26 am
Greetings Drisana! First, you must understand that this is not a list of ‘what foods I recommend’ on the mucusless diet, but an objective list of mucus/acid forming vs. non-acid forming foods. In the future I plan to release a list of mucusless and transitional mucus-formers that will not be as objective, but more of a ‘recommended foods’ list. We certainly respect perspectives the world over, although we may have a unique understanding or critique of them and how they work based upon our own empirical knowledge with the Mucusless Diet. Some people use the diet for short term healing, and others as a lifestyle. The methods could also be used for people who just want to transition to an improved vegan or raw-food diet. As a lifestyle, it is not as strict as many people assume, but a TRANSITIONAL DIET that includes raw and cooked mucus-free and mucus-forming foods. The key is to systematically transition away from the worst mucus-formers first to less harmful ones. I highly recommend that you take a look at the diet book to get a better understanding of what the Mucusless Diet is about. Peace, Love, and Breath!

ousa August 16, 2013 at 10:09 am
I mean seriously, what is left for us to eat, your lists include each and every food that I personally know, so what are the ‘good’ food please

Spira August 16, 2013 at 10:31 am
These two lists were meant to be more objective, i.e. acid-binding vs. acid-forming. The lists can certainly be used to explore some options. I plan to release a list of mucusless and transitional mucus-formers that will act more as a ‘recommended foods’ list in the near future.

Hi there 🙂
Love your stuff.
I’m sorry, I have a few questions 🙂
1) What about persimmon?

You said 98 degree 🙂
2) How much time should I heat it up? like an hour or ? 🙂

Thank you for all your awesome stuff.
Best regards,
Artem 🙂

Spira October 1, 2013 at 12:30 pm
Thank you for your kind words. Persimmons are fine for the transition as long as they are good and ripe. Are you asking about cooking the persimmons or cooking in general?

Artem October 1, 2013 at 1:48 pm
Thank you for your response 🙂

I’m sorry, I wasn’t clear 🙂

And, my question is -> How much time should I heat it up? Anything, I wanna test a bunch of stuff 🙂 not only persimmons 🙂

One more 🙂 Can I just put stuff in hydrochloric acid? I heard that hydrochloric acid almost represent stomach environment.

& 🙂 How old is Brother Air? 🙂 He is awesome 🙂

Again, thank you very much ^^
Best regards,
Artem 🙂

Spira October 11, 2013 at 2:54 pm
I’ve never tried putting it in acid. Yet, the cleaner we get the acid nature of our stomach totally changes. So it might not be a great example of what goes on inside of everyone. I’d heat it for at least 20 min, but you could experiment with that.

Explore the website and find the list of Mucus-free foods. Also, read the Mucusless Diet Healing System, which is the foundation of this system. It is about much more than just know what foods are good and bad, but how to transition away from the worst foods. https://www.mucusfreelife.com/devalina/revised-mucusless-diet/

BellaRN September 25, 2016 at 6:05 pm
I agree, to provide a list of ” mucous forming”, but leave out “non- mucous” is dangerous, as well as in my opinion deceptive and insensitive. I understand needing to make money, but a list of foods explaining what to eat is more beneficial than what not to eat; Focusing on the positive vs negative. Your link takes people to a site where you have to buy the information. Why not reverse the psychology and provide what is ” beneficial and healing” and pay for what is “not beneficial and healing”.

What about sprouts? are they mucus forming

Spira January 3, 2014 at 5:58 pm
Some of the more starchy sprouts might be slightly mucus-forming. The less starchy ones, like alfalfa, are relatively mucusless. During more intensive cleansing periods I would probably avoid the sprouts that I know are more starchy.

Alex July 5, 2014 at 9:46 am
But isn’t alfalfa very rich in proteins and fat ?

Spira July 13, 2014 at 8:08 am
It is not high in fat that I’m aware of, and “protein” analysis is not really a concern. After performing “mucus-forming foods” tests like the ones described by Ehret, they are mostly mucus-free and seem to eliminate well. As Ehret points out, we cannot rely on “food value” concept alone when determining the usefulness of a food item on the mucusless diet.

so, that list was petty much every food there is other than fruit. and one post says of course even fruit eventually can be mucus forming in the long run if not suggested properly ( and my stomach has been backed up lately but I can’t eat yogurt or anything so I dont know what to do)
and if we can’t eat any of that stuff, What in the World am I supposed to eat? 🙁

p.s please be through, I could hardly come up with a healthy meal idea when all of these things listed were an option.

Spira March 19, 2014 at 6:43 am
As mentioned in another comment, nowhere do I suggest that this list be viewed as a “forbidden foods list.” It is an objective list that identifies mucus and acid-forming foods. As I mention above “Ehret’s TRANSITION DIET will show you how to use less harmful mucus-forming foods to get off of the worst ones. Pus and Very Mucus-forming foods should be avoided from the beginning if possible. But Moderately or Slightly mucus-forming items may be used effectively during the transition.” The key is always the “Transition Diet,” and this list, along with the mucusless foods list, is simply a tool that can be used by people who are endeavoring to transition to a more mucus-free diet. See the Mucusless Diet (https://www.mucusfreelife.com/devalina/revised-mucusless-diet/) for a much better understanding on how to use this list. Peace, Love, and Breath!

Duncan February 4, 2014 at 5:30 pm
I appreciate all the time you spent researching this topic. I do feel that your “list” is a bit over the top. If I was to follow your list of foods that should be eliminated from my diet, I would be able to eat virtually nothing. I would also probably become horribly malnourished. Although, I really do enjoy reading about these “extreme diets” such as the paleo diet, Atkins, etc. The important thing to remember is that keeping food intake in moderation is key. Too much of some things can lead to not enough of other things…

Spira March 19, 2014 at 6:34 am
Nowhere do I suggest that this list be viewed as a “forbidden foods list.” It is an objective list that identifies mucus and acid-forming foods. Pus and Very Mucus-forming foods should be avoided from the beginning if possible. If you were to read the Mucusless Diet carefully, you will see that it is by no means an extreme diet. However, many people fail to understand the “transitional” nature of the diet and try to be mucusless right off the bat, which is not what Ehret or I recommend at all. Peace, Love, and Breath!

What about the gelatin used to wrap herbs and natural mucus free vitamins-could this be a source of disease and mucus?

Adi

Spira July 13, 2014 at 9:30 am
Yes, if that is the path one wants to take, plant-based caps would be the way to go. However, most mucusless diet practitioners pride themselves on being as “natural” as possible and avoid the use of processed supplements. They would rather “eat” the herbs on a salad than in a capsule.

Prof Spira: Any feedback regarding Goji Berry, Spirulina, Chlorella and other sea algae “Super-foods”, from a mucus-less/acidic perspective?

Spira July 13, 2014 at 9:27 am
Goji berries are mucus-free. I’m not fan of spirulina or chlorella. Most people use these items as “nutritional” supplements, and Ehret’s work challenges the foundation of such theories and approaches. They do not aid with the removal of cellular wastes, thus they would not be looked at favorably by most mucusless diet practitioners. The only sea vegetables that I find useful are dulse and kelp. I like to put dulse on top of my salads and periodically use kelp granules instead of salt.

I’m hoping to find a diet and lifestyle to guide my wife and i back to much improved vitality. I am reading Ehret’s book and have found this website to help along with your book, but I am also counseling with a naturopath/herbalist who studied extensively Ayurveda and the food diets based on the 3 dosha body types.

Could you tell me how you feel about Ayurvedic nutrition and if it is agreeable with your views?

Thank you.

Spira July 13, 2014 at 9:20 am
Greetings Steve, sorry for the delayed response. Ayurvedic nutrition does not correlate with the mucusless diet very well. From what I’ve read, there are many foods that are considered to be the best that are considered the worst from a mucusless diet perspective. Although, the idea of a specialized transitional approach for each person is important in the mucusless diet, the way of thinking about food and why we eat is totally different from Ayurveda. From a mucusless diet perspective, mucus-forming foods need to be systematically transitioned away from over time. And pus-forming foods should be eliminated as soon as possible (meat and dairy). Overall, I’m sure there are some useful principles and wisdom that can be found within the system’s texts, although I disagree with much of what I read. Peace, Love, and Breath!

Adi June 30, 2014 at 4:52 pm
I have be aware of the first book by the author . I was introduce to the muculess diet healing system over 20 years ago. I was in college . I started the practice and continue today with some personal changes. But there was then and still is a question about the statement the Professor made in the original book . He stated the ” white race was an unnatural sick ” race . His justification was related to the color and mucus . I don’t have my copy of the book now , so I don’t remember the page number ,but I am sure you will find the passage about mid way into the original book . I would like to know your opinion on he logic and reasoning for such statement.

Spira July 3, 2014 at 5:38 am
Greetings Adi! Thank you for your question. I do not have the space to get too deep into a discussion about the subject here in the comment section, however I will share a brief explanation from the Annoated, Revised, and Edited Mucusless Diet: “Ehret’s proposition is that skin color and other physiological traits primarily reflect the degree to which a person is internally encumbered with waste on the cellular level. It challenges the popular notion that the radical physical morphology of humans occurred based primarily on adapting to non-tropical climates further away from the equator.” My notes on the role of iron in the blood and my clarification of Ehret’s discussion of eugenics from the Annotated version are also helpful. If you want to have a serious discussion about this, I’d recommend joining our affiliate program and attending an online meetup. These are the kind of topics that we examine (affiliate info). Peace, Love, and Breath!

Adi July 3, 2014 at 2:56 pm
Well Put. The explanation is more expansive and softer than the Prof , less crude . Thank you for the more gentle approach to the subject of internal and external factors related to skin color and nutrition , including geographical locations of our ancestors. I have always believed that Power equals Vitality Minus Obstruction , but was a little concerned about the statement in the original Mucusless Diet Healing System , Arnold Ehret.

Enjoying your wonderful information. Please continue sharing. Just bought your e-books. awesome. My question – how do you properly cook a sweet potato. Thanks.

Spira July 3, 2014 at 5:11 am
Thank you for the kind words! My favorite way to cook a sweet potato is to back it. I might put it into the oven at about 425 and let it bake for 40-60 minutes, or cut it horizontally (like chips) into thin round pieces, put it on a baking sheet with some oil and spices placed in the oven for about 15 minutes, take it out and flip with a spatula, and then put it back in for about 10 minutes.

Catharina December 21, 2014 at 5:36 am

I’m sorry for the delayed response. To get deeper into his case, it would be best to have a full consultation. If you are interested, you can see my consultation packages here: https://www.mucusfreelife.com/devalina/mucusless-coaching/

Steaming a sweet potato is fine with me. I would avoid immersing them in boiling water though.

Alex July 5, 2014 at 7:57 am
Hello Prof. Spira, thanks for your wonderful work !

What do you think about lacto-fermented food like beet lacto-fermented juices ? It transforms the starch in grape sugar and was advocated by Ann wigmore ?
What do you think about isotonic sea water (Quinton) ?

Spira July 13, 2014 at 8:15 am
I am not a fan of cultured or “lacto-fermented” foods. They are acid-forming and to be avoided as far as I’m concerned. In nature, we prefer ripe fruit over rotten fruit. Why would we want rotten “cultured” foods unless our taste buds are craving something unnatural and acidic? And I’m not a fan of using sea water solutions, particularly for nasal irrigation. I used saline-based things in my nose before the diet, and on the diet there is no use for such a product.

Alex July 13, 2014 at 9:48 am
Thank you, it seems that René Quinton saved a lot of people by injecting them isotonic Sea Water which is very close to the blood serum.
Some people like Jehovah witnesses refuses to have blood transfusion and use Quinton serum instead.

Hi! My dad gas low blood count and need extra iron. Could this be helpful? The state we live in won’t give him blood until the blood count is at an absolute minimum. …
Thanks!

From our perspective, systemic cleansing and healing are necessary to overcome such issues. There are many people that have used mucus-free healing and fasting to overcome such issues.

I am eliminating foodsthat cause me to have mucous such as dairy and wheat. I am now eating more re vegetarian but enjoy wild caught salmon but now come to find out is mucous forming.

I am at a loss as to what to eat now! I only weigh 118 lbs and am not wanting to lose anymore.

Maybe I will try eating the bark off of the trees around us.

Spira September 10, 2014 at 3:34 pm
The key is learning to transition off of the worse foods toward mucus-free foods. Check out this practical list of mucus-free and mucuslean foods good to use during the “transition diet.” https://www.mucusfreelife.com/devalina/mucusless-diet-food-list/. You should never be hungry or unsatisfied if you transition properly. Also, be sure to check the the Mucusless Diet book if you haven’t yet: https://www.mucusfreelife.com/devalina/revised-mucusless-diet/. Peace, Love, and Breath!

Hello Dr Spira
I am 40 I’ve been suffering from bad breath, stuffy, runny nose, coughing cause by excessive mucus for years and years
I’m wondering how to heal this
please would you be able tell me what to do
Thank you
Djuz

Spira February 17, 2015 at 8:18 pm
First, closely read the New Annotated Mucusless Diet Healing System: http://bit.ly/mucusless-diet-amazon. The foundation of what you need to know in order to heal yourself is in the book. And read it with an open mind and willingness to work. You must clean out your system, which can be down with mucus-free foods, short-term fasting, and a few other therepies. Check out the book, and if you feel you need some one on one coaching, check out our consultation services here: https://www.mucusfreelife.com/devalina/mucusless-coaching/.

You can do it! Just got to commit yourself to make the change, follow the principles outlined in the book, and follow through! Let me know if you have any further questions.

I would like to better understand the acid section. how can I determine if a substance is acidic and how does that affect the body? I understand that coffee should be avoided. I have gone through a huge struggle getting off it and find it more addictive then alcohol or even cigarettes. on the other hand I don’t feel like tea is addictive at all. With coffee I couldn’t stop myself from having another cup but with tea I can just have one cup and not crave anymore. so what makes tea acidic? is it the ph value or the caffeine that is problematic? what about things like cold brewed tea? that is supposed to have much lower acid content. and what about Japanese matcha green tea. I have a tin of relatively high quality matcha and it is much less bitter then regular green tea. the higher the quality of matcha the sweeter it is supposed to taste. to me it doesn’t seem acidic it tastes similar to drinking spinach juice or something like that. it also has like 10x more theanine than regular tea, witch is a substance that is supposed to counter balance caffeine. hope you get back to me. Im also curious about a bunch of Chinese herbs and tonics that are not classified in the diet. I would like to know how to determine if those are acidic.

Spira February 2, 2015 at 10:58 am
Greetings Antonio,

Tea is much better than coffee and can be used on the transition. Herbal tea is the best, as it can be alkalizing if the right herbs are used. Conventional tea is just mildly acidic, but not the worst thing in the world to use at all. The caffeine is a stimulant that can harm the nervous system or endocrine glands over time, and it’s best to get your stimulation from fresh fruit or fruit juices. But, like I said, it’s okay for the transition and better than coffee. There are a lot of different types of tea and some may be a bit less acidic than others. In the long run, it is not something I would want to plan on using forever.

You could get PH papers and do some of your own testing. Make the tea from an herb you want to check out and see where it is. Yet, results are not always perfect unless you have great equipment. And, it is hard to test how the acidity intensifies within the body (or in the case of acid fruits, becomes very alkaline when digested). So, I would get some PH papers and experiment a bit. But overall, a good rule of thumb I use with items in the herbal kingdom is to stay away from things that seem kind of addictive. That usually indicates to me that it is something that will be antagonistic in the long run.

[…] 5.) Arnold Ehret developed the idea of the “Mucusless Diet” in which you eat only foods that do not produce mucus in the body in order to prevent more mucus build-up. Foods that cause mucus and cause acidosis and should be transitioned away from are: animal products (meat, dairy, eggs) , grains, beans/legumes, nuts, and any processing and/or isolation of certain aspects of food makes the effects much worse. There is a more in-depth list here. […]

Is primerose oil mucus forming? I have been taking primerose oil tablets for approx a week and have noticed alot of mucus in my throat. Is this normal?

Spira February 2, 2015 at 10:44 am
The oil, which extracts fatty-acids from the seed, may be mildly mucus or acid-forming. In small quantities it is probably not going to create a bunch of slime, but from a Mucusless Diet perspective, there is not really a good reason to take it. We are not concerned with “nutritional” concepts and supplements, as much as we are with using things that will help eliminate wastes. In the herbal realm, herbs that promote increased circulation and expectoration may be very useful, along with certain essential oils of leaves that particularly sooth the nervous system in cases where people are revitalizing endocrine glands.

Hi you have bananas in both to have and not to have ie mucus forming?

Spira February 2, 2015 at 10:37 am
Very well-ripened bananas (very yellow with black dots) are mucus-free, but “unripened” bananas (green skin) are starchy and potentially mucus-forming.

healthy life February 4, 2015 at 6:01 am
Thank you about the bananas 🙂 I am asthmatic so I always thought bananas was bad for me. I have had a fever and sinuses inflammation for the last week. I find eating nuts and cheese aggravates the situation. So definitely going to give your way a try for the next six months. Anyway Another ? , Where does mushrooms fit in ?

Spira February 10, 2015 at 2:25 pm
I’m not particularly a fan of mushrooms. They do not aid in elimination and have the potential to be acid-forming. Also, in general our body wants to eliminate fungus when possible. If not, we can have a host of issues. Overall, if they are put on a salad I don’t think it’s a big deal. But, I wouldn’t go down the “mushroom-steak” type of road. And on days while being totally mucus-free, I’d probably leave them off the salad.

John March 5, 2015 at 4:43 pm
Hello. So, going on over a year now I’ve been dealing with digestive issues consisting of upper abdominal tenderness, (like when I lay on my stomach or push with my hands i experience some moderate pain), loose stools, constipation, my stool smells funny, undigested food particles, white coating on my tongue, more frequent urination, and a few others. I saw a doctor and I was advised to drink miralax and eat fruits and vegetables until I achieved a normal bowel movement. It helped remarkably, but I couldn’t stick to the diet long enough because I’m stubborn like most ppl. My diet prior to my digestive problems consisted of Convenience foods like soda, fast foods. Honestly all junk food. I’m 22, I work in the electrical field so I’m tend to buy a lot of foods that are on the go and already prepared. My main breakfast I used to buy from a gas station near my home on my way to work every morning was pizza and Mountain Dew. Every weekend I would go out drinking with my friends. So I strongly believe that constant soda, fast foods, coffee, and alcohol may have led to a congested, mucus filled, impaired, digestive tract. Garlic, fruits, and vegetables are the only things that improve my stools appearance, smell, and size. Once I start eating processed junk food, my stools immediately look bad again and my symptoms come back. Do you think I may possibly have an over abundance of mucus and that the mucus less diet will help repair my digestive tract? If so, how long does it usually take to fully repair and eliminate the build up up mucus and toxins from the body? I’m not planning on eating junk food immediately after healing myself but I want to be able to enjoy an occasional piece of pizza or a piece of cake at a family members birthday party instead of looking like some stuck up health freak that’s “too good for junk food”

Spira March 5, 2015 at 5:46 pm
Greetings John! You can basically take the Mucusless Diet Healing System as far as you want or feel you need to. Many of my friends practice it as a lifestyle, but traditionally many people used it short-term to heal themselves of chronic illness. The length of time it would take for you to heal can not be determined ahead of time, as many factors are involved, including you physiology type, how aggressively you detoxify, etc. Definitely read the Annotated Mucusless Diet to check out the system. The key is learning to TRANSITION gradually, so that it does not feel like a shock to your system. If you ever need a private consultation to get a bit deeper into your specific case, check out our coaching packages HERE. Peace, Love, and Breath!

How about ginger or dried ginger (with no additives)? It’s not mentioned in the annotated MDHS book.

Ginger is mucus-free. When added to juices or herbal formulas, it can aid in circulation to a certain degree. I’m a fan of adding it to fresh juices.

Hey spira! What about drinking apple cider vineger as a cleanser for killing body parasites and stuff? People usually drink it in the morning to wake up the body, saying it works like lemon water. Also, what about almond/hazelnut milk?

I made a big mistake using Dr. Sebi’s food list as a guide to healing. One thing people don’t notice in his guide is that he is promoting the more healthier version of “soul food” not a diet of mucus free healing offered on Dr.Spira’s website. I contracted hyperthyroidism from his guide list and now have to start fasting and using this actual vegan diet instead. So for those looking at the contradiction at these two list, understand the reasons why. Dr.Sebi is not promoting “a mucus free life”, his guide list still contains acids, mucus, and pus so please eat his soul food in moderation. (i.e. events, celebration, birthdays, parties, weddings, etc.) and eat his food in small portions because I had to learn the hard way when eating large amounts. Before this I only consumed fruit and never felt sick or had any of the problems I do now, maybe a small salad here and there and fasting similar to what Dr.Spira recommends.

Thank you for all you info. I’m not sure I’ll ever be disciplined to go full or mostly non-mucus foods.

So, I don’t want to “through the baby out with the bath water”. Is adding / replacing as much non-mucus food to my regular diet…thus cleaning it up a bit, better than nothing at all?

Also I’ve found I can / will eat much more fruit if I get canned fruit in natural juices (no added sugar or fructose). I’ve read they are actually better than most grocery store fruit because they are canned ripe with most of their nutrients and grocery store fruit is picked so early, and “green”, they has less nutrients. It went on to say, the only fruits better are picked ripe out of a garden.

Question two: Lately I’ve been eating a ton of canned soup, like home made vegetable heat and serve. The ingredients have very few “long words”, so I’m thinking it’s certainly better than fast food. Would you agree?

Last, did you complete your list you reference in many of your responses?

Thank you

Anyone know about hemp protein being mucus free ? I also heard it is a fruit, not a seed. Which makes it a tough one to work out. There is also chlorella powder, but, if I remember rightly, it is referred to as “sea scum” here ?

There south beach diet taught me how much sugar is in everything but this eat to live aspect is crazy. There is literally almost nothing to eat but kale and lemon water.. About to hit the John the Baptist diet of locust and honey and that is probably on the list!

Antoine September 4, 2016 at 8:59 am
I appreciate where Prof. Is coming from and that sustainable health is the end goal. However, there is one massive flaw right at the root of this reasoning.
Our digestive systems are specifically designed to efficiently breakdown and entirely eliminate all types of food, eaten in moderation, available to humans. The actual debate is that of what is considered to be “food” and what is “moderate”.
Mucous in its every form is not always the enemy, in actual fact, we are made up of different kinds of matrix fluids that are in reality different types of mucous. These fluids are produces by special types of mucosa linings found through out our bodies.
Without these mucosal “barriers” we would be vulnerable to the outside world and all its little viruses and bacteria.

Without a doubt, some ingested items are harmful to us but these will never include foods that were specifically created for humans.

I always explain to my patients that the best foods are those that you eat as soon as you have pulled it out the ground are plucked it off a tree. They contain not only nutrients that are essential for life but they are packed with “life-force”!
The longer you wait to eat it, or the more you process it, the less life-force your food has.

I have seen astounding healing in some of my worst patients that follow a few simple guidelines.

As fresh as possible.
No concentrated foods unless it’s specific vegetable juice extracts for a limited time.
No processed foods.
No frozen foods.
No GMO foods.
No seedless foods.
No processed or bottled water.
No sweetening substances that ends with “ose”, like sucrose, glucose, fructose, sucralose etc… levulose is allowed as long as it’s sundripped, unheated, unfiltered raw honey.
No fruit juices unless it’s home pressed and in strict moderation.

Certain Meat can be eaten in moderation as long as the animal was healthy, stress free and obviously not a medicated animal.
All fruit and veg can be eaten as long as it’s very very fresh and also from healthy soil and trees that aren’t medicated or treated with poisons etc…

Keep in mind that eating as healthy as possible although extremely important is not the only way to health.
It’s vitally important to know your genetic make up and constitution and then to make decisions regarding your health with this in mind.

Regarding this mucos free diet it’s not natural nor healthy in the long run to eat that way. Our Creator in all his wisdom made retain as long as there was moderation in all habits that we would and could enjoy good health.

He never intended for us to weigh our food or to eliminate most foods or even to eat everything raw. Rather he designed us to make food a part of our fondest memories with its rich aromas and exquisite tastes.

So yes, let us certainly enjoy all that he has provided.

Sammie September 29, 2016 at 11:48 am
@ Antoine i agree with your comments however i would follow the late hippocrates concept about food..’let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food’

Sammie September 29, 2016 at 11:51 am
I also think this is a really bad sales pitch for the book, sorry spira it’s just not helpful. You don’t know who will come across this site and what their state of mind will be. Hello,

when will the mucus free food list be posted?

Gregg D Pyka November 17, 2016 at 3:37 am
What’s amazing is everybody is different, I cut out all grains and dairy to start. Then I needed to remove Corn in all forms especially corn syrup, the crazy thing is I seem to be able to eat cane sugar with no problems. The same with meat, I can eat all the sardines and canned red salmon I want but pork is another story. I think I’m allergic to corn which is bad since I use world’s best cat litter which is 100% corn kernels, I could be breathing that in ?
I’ve just been up for 2 days now since everytime I lay down I feel like I’m going to choke and jump out of bed, all because I ate a 15 oz can of yams that had some corn syrup in it. I even strained and rinsed them and re sweetened them with Raw Honey. I need to figure this out since it’s been happening for the past 8 years or longer, cayenne was working but now I’m over 55 years old and it’s getting worse. A few months ago I beat my chest so hard with Bonger Balls trying to loosen up mucus I caused a bleed somewhere in my windpipe or throat etc. and nearly drowned in my own blood. 3-4 hours of hacking at the kitchen sink watching it turn from red to brown (clotting) to clear (clotted) my forehead hurt for 3 days afterwards. I live alone and almost passed out 3 times, that would have done it. So yea, time to get serious. I’m not complaining since I went to having this 90% of the time a few months ago to 30% since I haven’t identified all the main culprits, I thought cutting all grain and dairy would have done it but nooooooo LATER This site helped a lot =^..^= thanks

I am Curious about Eggplant.
You don’t list it anywhere

Spira January 6, 2017 at 12:50 am
Eggplant is relatively mucus-free if it is not overcooked. But, I’d always eat it with a salad to help it digest and keep moving through the system.

I’m definitely impressed. As simple as you kept much of the language in the text, the writings resonate with me on a much deeper level. The reading forced me to reassess my personal perspective on the subject, and served to challenge all that I previously held to be true. I have much (more) work to do! Thanks again!
